Why hockeytalkradio.us?

September 7, 2015 by Dennis Chighisola 1 Comment

Yes, about that hockeytalkradio.us address…

Okay, so why the “.us” in our domain name, hockeytalkradio.us?  The short answer is that “.com” was taken as we readied to build this new website.  The longer answer is eventually going to prove interesting (and maybe humorous) to listeners — and even show hosts.  But, that’s a story for another time.

Isn’t it interesting, that we all tend to get rather comfortable with the “dot com” designation?  That’s why we thought it necessary, though, to remind our listeners about the different address:  hockeytalkradio.us.

Will there ever be any real confusion?  Hmmmmm…  Our thinking is that the “dot com” version was scooped on purpose — as soon as someone learned about our new venture, and they might be planning on a competitive station.  Will they succeed?  We don’t think they’ll ever match our programming, but they might manage to cause some annoying confusion.  Anyway…

Once we searched for a new domain name, the “.us” jumped right out at us.  No, we didn’t think “.net” would do it, nor “.org”.  No, the feel just wasn’t there.

On the other hand, there was — or is — some true meaning in the “.us” designation, as in “all of us being in this thing together”.

Please don’t forget it’s:    hockeytalkradio.us

Want to Join Our All-star Show List?

September 6, 2015 by Dennis Chighisola 6 Comments

Only within the past few weeks have we put out the call for top hockey podcasters?

Yes, we’d just created an around-the-clock, all-hockey radio station, and knew then that hockey folks would love it.  Even early reviews are telling us that, with a pair of early listeners sharing the opinion that, “This is going to be big!”

Go figure, that one response came from a lady, and it was about ladies, too.  For, she described how many of the hockey moms she knows listen to AM hockey shows on their car radios on their way to and from work.  And she suggested that they’re all going to prefer this new station, mainly because it’s all-hockey talk, from early morning and on through the night.

The shows that initially committed on this hockey station are absolutely awesome, and so are they daring, what with their volunteering to take part in something that’s totally new, and maybe even a ways outside the box.  For, let us tell you, that there were some podcasters who didn’t respond to our earliest messages.  Once again, though, aaaaaah…  We’re sure a number of them wanted to hide in the weeds, or not commit until they saw the project come to fruition.  If there’s a problem with that, we need only refer to the old adage, “Snooze, you lose.”  Ya, with the lineup we now have, we can be VERY selective from here onward.

Yup, that around-the-clock, all-hockey radio station is now a reality, in the form of Hockey Talk Radio!

Around-the-clock, All-hockey Radio StationTo be perfectly honest, Executive Producer, Dennis Chighisola, has said that he’d never gotten too much into the fan-based-type podcasts, where the hosts rant and rave about their favorite (or least favorite) hockey teams.  After having to listen to them so often as he’s programmed, though, he says he’s come to love them, and he’s even become attached to the various personalities involved.  So, his guess is that new listeners will ultimately feel the same.

Of course, having been a long time hockey coach, Dennis’ first love is hockey instruction, and that’s what psyched him so much about this new endeavor.  With that, he’s already enlisted a number of great specialists, who provide listeners with tons of tips — about skills, coaching, fitness, nutrition, and mental toughness.  Still, he’s looking to add more of this ilk.

No, we’re not done stacking the lineup yet, especially when it comes to recruiting more from the latter group.

Those on the goaltending side of the game are going to love the tips that will soon be coming from a specialty coach now working in Europe — his shows should stat airing very soon.  We’re also going to be shortly joined by a guy considered to be one of the tops in American sports, with his area of expertise being a little difficult to explain right now.

Yes, this around-the-clock, all-hockey, online radio station is now a reality, and it deserves to be favorited for quick access.

Given a little time, we already know that some other kinds of upgrades are necessary.  We’re also all ears, in hopes listeners give us their feedback.  We’ll be carefully monitoring all the pages for comments, but this our Listener Feedback page meant exclusively for your ideas — from good to bad to ugly.

With all that, please give this new station a good listen, give us a good chance, and then think about becoming involved.

Yes, want to join our all-star show list?  For, if you have a podcast or ideas for a good one, we’re willing to help you join our lineup — and we’ll even try to help if you lack the technical know-how.

Hockey Talk Radio News

Here’s the latest goings on with Hockey Talk Radio News…

On Demand vs Online Radio

I’m sure you’ve listened to many podcasts. In a way, they’re available “on demand” — or, you can choose to listen to any specific audio program you wish. There’s certainly some good to that. If there’s a slight downside to podcasts or on demand programs, however, it’s the fact that you must look for another program once the selected show is complete.

Online radio, on the other hand, is very much like regular AM or FM radio, in that the programming is done for you, and it just keeps coming for as long as you want to listen. No, you don’t have any program options — you either listen or you don’t. However, if you like a certain kind of music or a certain kind of talk, online radio is a great way to go.

All that, of course, brings us to Hockey Talk Radio. For sure, we encourage you to listen to your favorite shows on their own sites — doing the on demand thing. However, if you’d like to take a complete station with you — on a walk, on a drive, or if you just want to sit back and listen to it on your laptop, we promise that Hockey Talk Radio will keep you entertained and informed for nearly 24-hours per day, over seven days per week.

In The Crease Show

August 28, 2015 by Dennis Chighisola 5 Comments

A Little About Michael McCarthy and his In The Crease Show

“In the crease” will be about all issues related to goaltending — anything from drills to proper technique to equipment to game play, and any issues listeners would like to explore.  Goaltending is the most important position on the ice, and generally the determining factor in a team’s overall results.

~ Mike McCarthy

Michael McCarthy began playing at age four, and went straight into the net where he remained for 23 years.   Mike played in leagues around the Boston, MA-area such as high school, university, junior, and semi-professional and minor leagues.

In The CreaseSince making the transition into coaching, he continues to work with players of all ages and skill levels.

Michael is currently based in Sweden, where he continues to focus on goaltending, while at the same time being active as a head coach.  His primary focus at the moment is with teams of elite players, ages 16-20, but he also constantly works with professional level players.

Mike has had players graduate on to the NHL, AHL, NCAA, Canadian major junior leagues (like the OHL), and European professional leagues such as SHL (Sweden), KHL (Russia), NLA (Switzerland), as well as many other high levels.

Mike is currently working within one Swedish club, where he acts as head coach for two teams, assistant head coach for two more, and head goaltending coach.  In addition to those responsibilities, he works for two separate goaltending camps, an international hockey school,  and he acts as an outside consultant and scout for several programs.

Michael McCarthy holds a firm belief in loving the game and playing hard, and he most values intelligence, heart, and guts in a player.

Have a question or comment for Mike?  Just use a comment box below.  He’d love to hear your ideas for his In The Crease Show.

The Program

Meet The Boys From The Program

The Program is a show without hockey borders, which means simply nothing is out of bounds. We record once per week, going over the issues of the week while throwing in some hockey recaps here and there, plus whatever catches our eye.

Our program is done with a dry, sarcastic humor sometimes as often unfiltered hockey talk can be. One never quite knows who will wind up on the show — from a former player to a general manager, to a writer, or even to an owner. We do not run or hide from controversy as the podcast deals with everything full steam ahead. It is the only way to go after all.

The ProgramChris Wassel ~ The bad kid in school who never studied and yet got good grades ended up here. Yes it was not what you expect but Mr. Wassel is truly a jack of all trades. He writes all sports but his first and true love is hockey and particularly fantasy hockey. Though the opinions are usually brash and passionate, there is a certain conscience in the mind of this writer and podcaster. Literally afraid of nothing, his shows fly in the face of conventional tendencies and often ruffle feathers along the way. He really would never want it any other way and the shows are like his children — even if they can border on uncanny hunches and the sublime from time to time. Dull is not optional here!

*

The ProgramTim Rosenthal ~ Mr. Rosenthal has been my Chris Wassel’s co-host for the past four years.  He writes for Boston Daily and you will see his writings on the Boston Bruins via Boston.com.  The Boston native brings a unique and grounded perspective to the podcast and is always willing to trade barbs whenever the opportunity arises. Expect him to go where most journalists will not and hold nothing back when it truly matters.  He is a credentialed writer who will also cover the Boston college hockey scene from time to time as well.

Blunt Talk

August 26, 2015 by Dennis Chighisola 2 Comments

A Message From Gino — About Blunt Talk

Gino Arcaro - Blunt TalkI believe we all have a potential soul of a lifter. We are called to lift for life. We can lift ourselves. We can lift others. I have been lifting for 45 consecutive years, 100% natural. I started lifting as an obese, dysfunctional 12-year old. Lifting transformed my life physically and mentally. In 2001, I expanded my #BasementGym by opening a 24-hour commercial gym called X Fitness Welland Inc., currently in its 15th year of operation. I lift almost every day. It’s part of who I am and will always be, but it doesn’t define me.

At 18, I was hired as a police officer, starting a 15-year police career. I became a SWAT team officer at 20 years old and detective at 26. At the same age, I became a high school head football coach, starting a 40-year volunteer coaching career.

I’ve earned a Master degree, and undergraduate degree, and Level 3 NCCP Coaching certification. I have completed a partial PhD dissertation. I am a graduate of Ontario Police College where I earned a Recruit Training diploma, a Criminal Investigation diploma, and a Homicide Investigation certificate.

At 33, I changed gears, leaving policing and starting a 20-year career as a college law enforcement professor/program coordinator. During that time, I became a bestselling academic author of law enforcement textbooks. Recently, I made the literary transition to non-fiction writing with my first motivational book, Soul of a Lifter. I’ve also produced my SWAT offense and defense systems that I developed over 40 seasons of coaching football at high school, college and semi-pro levels. With my #Pledge to write about everything with which I am conversant, I’ve produced both non-fiction and technical books on Entrepreneurship, Business, Weight Training, Football and Fitness for children and adults.

Keep lifting,
Gino Arcaro M.Ed., B.Sc.

A Little About The Breakout Podcast And the Show’s Hosts

We are a Pittsburgh Penguins based podcast, although we do cover the entire NHL.  A majority of the time we do joke around, so take nothing we say too seriously.  We love everyone (except the Flyers) and the great sport of hockey.  If you are looking for an entertaining and insightful take on hockey, you are damn sure in the right place. (This is an explicit podcast)

*

Hockey Talk RadioLew – The producer of the show, has been a Pens fan and a hockey player his whole life.  His second team is the Florida Panthers.  Lew also has an unhealthy obsession with the word “bud”.

Hockey Talk RadioGreg – He likes to put in any input that seems correct, though most times it will be wrong, but everyone needs a punching bag.  Also, Greg’s second favorite team is the Dallas Stars.

Hockey Talk Radio

Keith – Host of the show, he always brings the show back into line.  Also, Keith knows a vast amount of hockey trivia and will smack anyone of us when it comes to the past or present of the NHL.  The last thing anyone needs to know is that Keith’s favorite team is the Leafs.
